From crisis to court, a journey of courage and support

A woman and her children were referred to our SWS WDVCAS service after being assessed as at serious risk due to long-term domestic and family violence.

For many years, she endured severe coercive control and abuse – physical, sexual, financial and psychological—by her partner, who frequently relocated the family to isolate and dominate her. After fleeing, she found temporary safety with extended family.

With our support, she began reporting previously unreported abuse, developing a detailed timeline for police which led to further investigation and charges being laid. As her matter progressed to a defended hearing, she faced significant challenges navigating the legal system. Communication with the prosecution was limited, and key details of her case were at risk of being overlooked. She felt overwhelmed by the formal court environment and uncertain about what to expect.

Our team advocated on her behalf, ensuring her concerns were communicated clearly to police and legal representatives. We supported her through preparation for the hearing, clarified the court process and provided trauma-informed, in-person support on the day.

Despite the pressure, she delivered her evidence with strength and composure. A final Apprehended Violence Order was granted, offering her increased protection.

While awaiting ongoing case management, she also received urgent practical assistance, from financial aid and legal referrals to housing support and essential items.

She now has parenting payments in place, legal representation through Legal Aid and is progressing with a long-term housing plan.

Her story highlights the importance of timely, coordinated and survivor-centred support in helping women not only escape violence but also navigate complex systems and reclaim their lives.
